External Indexing boards like smoothstepper

Can EMC2 interface with other fpga based cards to perform the stepping? My computer cannot handle the speed I would like, and an FPGA card is much cheaper than a new motherboard. Besides, I'd be surprised if even the "best" motherboards can match the speed of an fpga card.

I know that EMC2 is supposed to be a real-time setup, but I'd be happy just using it as an interface and queuing system.
