Hi,
I have no idea where to catagorise this question please move it as you see fit.
My machine is mech mate, double steppers on rack & pinion on the Y(long)-axis & 1 motor for the X(gantry) & Z-axis.
All was well carving away for many months & I decided to re-surfact the spoil board.
I generated a g-code of pocketting a 2540x1340 area & reference the origin at -35,-35 using 2" end mill feed Z at 1.5mm & 9000mm/m.
All went well & suddenly the machine stopped & gave the following error message on AXIS on the lower right corner says:-

Joint 0 following error

I checked the hardware & nothing was jaming the rail of other mechanism, went throught the drivers to find loose connections, measured the voltages & motor temperature, all are well.

What could had went wrong? I'm now stranded with work progress...

Please help

Thanks in advance.

Ken

I guess you use stepper motors without any external feedback (encoder).
So its all internal in EMC.
See here for some possible causes in this case:
wiki.linuxcnc.org/emcinfo.pl?Following_Error

Have you ever used this speed ? Try to reduce speed as first attempt.

Thanks for the speedy response. YOU ARE A STAR!!!
Now I learn the purpose of min_ferror & max_error... the hard way...
I'm taking the safe path by finding by trial & error the highest speed (near) which I can run for now, it failed miserably at 8500mm/sec but it is holding up at 6500mm/sec. I'll finish off the resurfacing & stick to the highest speed possible speed until I get all my work off my back.
Will play with the min_ferror & max_ferror later.

have a look also at BASE_PERIOD and run latency-test.
Maybe you can optimize it, to squeeze a bit more speed.

I derated the latency, as I use USB without hard disk, the PC sort of got hick up some time... I may use a regular P4 to replace my present ATOM MBobo.

A better (and cheaper) solution would be to abandon software step generation. A Mesa 7i43 will plug into the parallel port and give you smooth step rates up to megahertz, and then you don't even need a base thread, just the 1kHz servo thread. As a bonus you get 48 IO pins rather than 25.
