Joint following error was created by wwr
Hi!

I'm using emc with a motenc card, and a 3axis milling machine.
Recently I updated to the latest version. Sience then the machine runs for 1 or 2 minutes then one of the coordinates suddenly jump to a random number (about 300000 mm) The machine stops with a joint following error.
This happens even if i don't move the machine.

There were no hardware changes, I installed the system from a live CD.

I have no idea what to do.

What version number of EMC are you running?

A quick google of motenc shows it might be a servo system.

I suspect an encoder problem.

Is it always the same axis?

It's good that it stops, but bad that it happens, I suppose.

What version of EMC2 were you using before? (We can look to see if there have been any changes to the Motenc driver).

Is this a servo or stepper machine? What is the feedback from the mill to the PC?

I'm using V2.4.3 now. The old system was V2.3.0.

Yes, its a servo system. The error shows usually on the Z axis, but not always.

There are encoders with index signals but i dont use the indexing.

Can I assume you followed the instructions here for upgrading from 2.3.x to 2.4.x?

wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/emcinfo.pl?UPDATING

Also I would update to the latest version 2.4.6 if possible.

I checked the documentation before updating.
I installed it on a new harddrive from the live CD.
I have the old config on the old HDD just in case.

I'll try to update to the latest version tomorrow.

Did you create a new config or use the old one from 2.3.x?

I made a copy of the sample config in the new system, and modified it according to the old config and the requirements in the documentation.

Ok, just making sure we covered all the bases as far as the software is concerned. So it does seem like some mechanical or electrical issue that has crept in...

Yes, that is what i'm afraid of too.

The interesting thing is that there were no changes in the hardware, except the HDD.
I'll put the old drive back tomorrow to make sure if its a HW or SW problem.
