I was hoping someone has had some experience with this Mini Comp

If not it's a tuff choice between this and the NC-189

Last year I bought essentially a similar setup on Newegg for $23 more. Except, I had to put it together. AND, I got twice the RAM. AND, I got a hard drive. Overall, more for less, with the exception of five minutes on a screwdriver.

Look for this
www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121643
--Add cheap ram (I paid $22 for 4Gb)
--Find just about any WD HDD for under $60
--Add a mini-ITX case that includes power supply (range from $50-90...I paid $70, but it's more expensive now)

...and you've got a faster processor and no doubts that it will work; the BOX series work well. And it's from NewEgg, so you know they'll replace anything DOA. On the other hand, the ebay case is an Intel m'board, so it will likely work fine, too.

it's a D525MW in a case. So it is a known-good system.

But, do you need a case? I tend to see the PC motherboard as just one more PCB to go in the controller box (and it is generally the cheapest, too)

thanks 4 the info guys but it doesn't really answer my question. Ok say I change to the D525MW is that a better choice than the NC189? I like the fact that NC189 has extra I/O's but it's got less ram and it's slower. I just want to get the right one so I only spend once!

Thanks
Robert

Hi

Have you got a link to this NC-189, I tried searching for it and can't find anything that seems to be what you are talking about

Does anyone know if the NC Box can run with any Ubuntu version newer than 8.04?

Not that there is any functional problem with 8,04, and it runs the latest version of LinuxCNC perfectly well.

If you recall, I loaded 10.04 on it, but the latency figures were far worse.

8.04 with the 2.6.30 rtai kernel was the best overall, runs even better if you strip out the clunky gnome desktop and use lxdm / icewm

To answer your question submicro, I would use the D525.

I have a NCBOX sat next to me and it is quite a capable machine, but the D525 will be FAR easier to set up.

have a read of the thread JT highlighted and you will see what I mean

I think someone might have figured out a way to run 10.04 but I might be full of it too and not know better.

Robert, make sure you read the entire thread before you say you want the NCBox. Also, you must be in the USA...
