I have no luck with either the live boot or install. It hangs on both. The live boot just goes through an endless loop. I will provide error message in a bit.

You will have to tell us exactly what board you have.

The 2 Gigabytes boards on the latency test that give good results are H61 not H81.
(mis-read the number on my first reply)

We are starting to see problems with some manufacturers who make boards expecting windows 8 and are unable to even detect anything else.

Then there is UEFI BIOS, efi boot loaders and gpt disc partitions.

In 'the interests of security', microsoft has persuaded a lot of manufacturers to try and make loading anything but their crap very difficult.

Here are the specs of the board

us.shuttle.com/barebone/Models/DS81.html
That is all the specs I have on it, their manual is not so hot for documentation, I can tell you there is no UEFI Bios

I have a SSD installed with partitioned windows 7 on it. I was able to do an install and install the GRUB bootloader but during boot up it goes to a flashing cursor, top left screen, as you can tell I am a noob to the Linux community, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi

Looks like a laptop in a box, even uses laptop memory modules.
Just curious as to how you are going to connect it, with no parport and just one half size mini PCIe spare

One thing that strikes me is there is immediately a BIOS update available.

Have you done it?

The number of boards released with defective BIOS, closely followed by an update is quite high.

regards

PS
You have not said what it is you are trying to install.

If it is 10.04 try Wheezy and vice versa

Its installed,,Wheezy that is but with no luck on running, it will not boot. I was having issues with my wireless keyboard, I had to go to a wired setup just to even install, I get the boot loader select the OS and then I just get a flashing cursor top left. Ctrl/alt/del restarts, and that's all I get. Is there an error log? I will try 10.04 tomorrow, thanks for your help

I have a nasty feeling of deja-vu here.

The flashing cursor top left indicates you have selected a valid kernel in GRUB and it has attempted to boot.

It is however indicative of a deep incompatibility with kernel.

I have built kernels in the past which have done this and more important, this has been the experience of some users trying to run a rtai kernel on some of the newer chipsets.

There will be no log, it is too early.

If the 10.04 based LiveCD does not produce a running kernel, I would suggest you download the standard Wheezy install iso from the Debian site and try that.

If that runs, I can only suggest you try to get your money back and I will post a big warning on the latency wiki.

You will note there is already one on there about a board that boots rtai but USB etc does not work.

An earlier board would not run rtai at all, but it proved impossible to narrow down the problem as the same chipset was used on lots of boards that ran OK

I use the netinstall

280MB and it pulls the rest on your internet connection, so it is always up to date after install

cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/7.6.0/i386/...6.0-i386-netinst.iso
