MESA 7i96 and 7i77 was created by ihavenofish
SO, I have a 7i96s, with a 7i77 connected to it, and i flashed the 7i96s_7i77d.bin firmware..... But nothing changes in pncconf. Do not see any reference to it in the drop down.
What have I done wrong?

Probably nothing.
Make a config for 7i96S, start it, use hal show to watch the pins and see if there are 7i77 pins there.
You can also use mesaflash to check if the firwmare is ok, it should report 7i77 pins also.

You must have 5V and field power supplied to the 7I77 for
The 7I77s pins to be present
Also if it reports 7i96 pin names instead of 7i96s, you are like running a
too old version of LinuxCNC to fully support the 7I96S (2.9 is needed for full support)

I am running 2.9. It runs the 7i96s normally on its own. Still working fine even with the firmware change. MESAFLASH is what is reporting it as a 7i96. v3.4 something something? maybe it needs an update.
And no, I do not have field power on the 7i77. Only 5v. I wasn't using field pins but I guess it still needs it? I will connect that and see later today.
Thanks.

Yes, the 7I77 needs need field power power for the field I/O section pins to appear
(the analog section pis should appear with just 5V)
I would update Mesaflash

Nothing appears at all from the 7i77. I think I do have the newest mesaflash from what I can tell.
I guess the cable could also be the problem. Not sure how to go about checking that. There are 2 leds lit up on the 7i77.

What does
mesaflash --device 7i96s --addr [card_address] --dbname3 7i77 --readhmid
report?

but that is not the card name. (and not used by the driver)
The hal names should all be hm2_7i96s.something
