2.8 not working

I need help, please.
I have been running 2.7 without problems.
I've done a fresh 2.5 install and used my 2.7 config. The program automatically updated the config and created an "old" folder but now nothing works.
I've tried creating a new config with stepconf using the same settings as in 207 but that too does not work.

Need more info. Error messages and maybe post the config files.

Here is the log file.
This is whats happening:
The z axis works but very very slowly. The x and y motors make a sound but the gantry wont move. A sort of shuddering.
I'm using the same machine. The 2.7 installation is running under Wheezy. My 2.8 installation is running under Buster on an SSD.
Thanks once again for everyone's kind help - don't for a moment think that it's not appreciated.
I gave up on a new configuration using stepconf as it would not even come to life with the power on button
