Went and double checked and I indeed had it set to differential. Switched it over to and sure enough I got it to read out on the dro when I rotated the spindle. Thank you

PCW, I always understood that the shield ground should be connected at least at one end. That is the recommendation from most encoder manufacturers such as Dynapar: www.dynapar.com/knowledge/encoder_issues...ring_best_practices/

Kylizer's picture shows his encoder wiring follows that recommended practice. I have a similar situation (7i97, single ended encoder) and connected the shield to 0 V terminal. Is there a particular reason not to follow this practice with the 7i97?

It is very true that shielding should be wired only on one side, most of the time, there are for sure cases where it is required to have both sides wired but usually for high power stuff, not for signaling.
It is also very wrong to wire the shield to 0V or common, it has to be grounded to a ground plane that actually goes to outside the shop in the ground.

Tommylight -- so connect drain to chassis then?

Edit: the analog servo drive connection recommends connecting the drain wire to GNDN, is this a different case?

Yes and no.
Yes connect to GROUND or chassis ground, and no that is not a drain.
Take PCW's advice and leave it not connected, do some testing and if you get interference, then tie it to ground.

And i do understand the confusion, the internet is full of useless and plain wrong information's, especially calling the 0V or common rail "GND" or "ground", it is not.
GND or ground should be used only for the wire that actually and literally goes into the ground.
Oh well, modern era of misinformation is upon us ...
