Using Git to install LinuxCNC for translation

I would like to translate the axis interface in to Dutch.

From what I understand the best thing to do is use "Git" so that all changes and new stuff can be easily be added to repositories so they become availabel to everyone.

The wiki pages seem a bit dated so I'll have to ask a lot of questions to get started.

First of all, does my pc get a new install of linC when I start using git? I use the simulator on my day to day laptop.

Any news to this? I am really interested in this because of a duch customer. Could I help?

I think I have git installed now, and have found the linuxcnc-dev files, which include the .po files.

Can I just take the de.po file and save that as nl.po and then start translating al German text to Dutch?

I read that I have to start with .pot files but can not find those.

I read that page, it mentions .pot files in scr/po but there are none to be found there.

Maybe I have the wrong version?

Edit: The mentioned page is still about emc, maybe it is old?

Just as a quick test I've downloaded the source (2.5.3 tarball) unpacked and build it (with --enable-simulator).

then:

# export LANG=nl_NL.utf8
# scripts/linuxcnc configs/5axis/5axis.ini

-> Axis starts up with english text

# cp src/po/de.po to src/po/nl.po
# (cd src; make)
# scripts/linuxcnc configs/5axis/5axis.ini

-> Axis starts up with german text

Phew,
I am quite comfy with editing .po files and translating english-dutch but this explanation freezes me

I would need to be taken by the virtual hand in order to make sense of the humongous amount of steps that seem to lay before me.

Would it be an option to just translate the po files I have an then email those to someone?
