Hardware requirements? I have some really old hardware....

I have an old AMD Athlon 7850/6Gb RAM (maybe 2008?). It has currently an old version of LinuxCNC (from ~2018 or so - but can't reach due to a Win7 installation soft of wiped the boot menu, wich can be fixed I guess).

Anyway, that LinuxCNC version worked (rarely used though). I guess getting the PC back to booting into the LinuxCNC partition shouldn't be too difficult.

But a newer version is always tempting. Is that possible with 2.8.4 or is my hardware too old?

My aim is to use OpenPnP too (Pick and Place machine Software) and I like to have one PC for CNC.I might upgrade later, OpenPnP might need more power due to their 'vision', but for now it does work with Win7 on the same PC.

It should work OK, so download, boot live from USB, test, and if that looks ok then install.
You can do all the testing without installing most Linux distros.

>boot live from USB

I tried to do a DVD. Does 2.8.4 fits on one 4.7Gb DVD? Seems I have to find an empty USB stick.

GRUB also stopped working after I (had to) install Windows 7. Need to fix GRUB too. Although don't really need Win7 anymore.

2.8.4 is about 2.1GB in size, so yes it does fit on a DVD.

I tried now with a SD card and that worked fine. Loads pretty fast too.

I have a bit of an unrelated question, I have an older LinuxCNC (~2018) installed on another partition that I can access due to GRUB problems.

Is there a way to get the old machine data (setup data) from that partition?

If not I will have to get GRUB going again.

Yes, find
/home/yourusername/linuxcnc/configs/configname
Copy that folder.

Thank you. All settled. GRUB works now, can boot to Win7 and LinuxCNC.
My old version was 2.7.15 - and it was blank. Didn't mill for a while and must have used another PC with a pre-2010 version. .
