I don't see why you couldn't as long as you can generate the correct gcode. Encoders are probably a good to guarantee timing consistency

Yes,ithink is same idea what iam thinking,
So best process is,touch probe with x axis(wheel) with A axis going turn a.k.a 5 degree, then save coordinat with dxf format,
Then user can be redraw,
Then gcode produce

You could most likely use a probe to digitize a cam profile

Take a look in the sim nc_files at gridprobe.ngc
That file does generate a probe file, what can be used in other programs.

At younger tuning times, I used a digital dial (0,001 mm resolution) and steel disk with a 360 degree marks on it.
I transferred every degree a value of the dial to an excel sheet. I used that data do make a master hub and a copy grinding machine to produce the cam shafts for ma motorcycles ;-)

Cam grinding is complicated by the fact that the contact point moves up and down as the cam rotates due to tangent angles. So the wheel diameter is a critical variable. And that changes as the process continues.

So I think that a cam grinder needs some form of wheel diameter measurement to work properly.

I did have a bit of a play around some time ago.
