As my newly installed Bookworm linuxcnc will not run the spindle (link below), can I just add the configuration files to a fresh Buster install or will it need some converting?

Yes, it should just work. The configs are completely agnostic about the underlying OS. 2.9.x runs on both Buster and Bookworm.

But see my reply to the other thread for an alternative solution.
You seem to be mis-identifying the likely cause, it isn't because you have moved from Buster to Bookworm, but because you have updated from 2.7 to 2.8+ and the spindle HAL pin names have changed to support multiple spndles.
