dynamic braking is an option on some of the drives available. the one I have handy is a delta vsd-e. you can add a resistor. my big teknomotor atc spindle has a 500w resistor though it is iso 30, so no orientation needed.

I see where your going there. that vfd allows 6hz min speed, which is, uh... 360rpm or obviously 6 revs per second being a 2 pole motor. if dynamic braking could stop from that speed within 1 degree after hitting the index, it could work. I wonder if the weights of the different tools would cause the stopping distance to change much.

Does the VFD have DC braking capability?
If this could be energized by LinuxCNC when in orient mode and when
the prox triggered it might be good enough if the spindle RPM was low enough
when doing the orient cycle.


A PID works better when it has equal authority in both directions. So you should see an improvement in control by improving braking, simply because the motor can accelerate and decelerate at the same rate.
