I guess the root cause is this:

[ 0.000000] Local APIC disabled by BIOS -- you can enable it with "lapic"

I had this problem with 2.4.3 installed on Xubuntu 10.4.
A quick fix is to add "lapic" to the the apropriate line in grub.cfg.
Not sure why this happens, and how to solve it really.

Sorry but I'm not where I find this very specialist grub.cfg
I have to open and insert the line lapic

Scusami ma non sono molto esperto dove trovo questo grub.cfg
Devo aprire e inserire la linea lapic

Try this: in /etc/default/grub, change

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

to

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash lapic"

and then run update-grub and reboot

e' successo anche ad altri pare.

praticamente apri il terminale,e digiti:
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
modifichi la riga come sopra proposto.

poi salvi, chiudi e nel terminale digiti:
update-grub

riavvia e prova.

I added lapic to the grub config, updated grub, and checked the bios (no options for lapic, very basic bios), and I still can't get around the "LOCAL APIC CONFIGURED BUT NOT AVAILABLE/ENABLED" problem on one of my machines!!!! Help!

in this case you have two options:
- use another PC/mainboard
- go back to Ubuntu 8.04

another vague idea: update the BIOS of your mainboard (I'm not sure if this can help)

I installed 8.04 on that machine and although emc2 works, it has that AWFUL problem of getting stuck at shutdown (after saying it is halted and even flashing the keyboard LEDs once convincingly) and not turning off. I HATE HARDY because I REMEMBER this damn problem AND COULDN'T WAIT TO UPGRADE and be rid of it forever. I think 9.04 finally fixed it and 10.04 was where the real fixes (and some regressions) started pouring in if I remember correctly. Now I am using this machine with it's obsolete 8.04: I am FORCED to use Hardy with this crappy kernel that won't shut the damn machine off! Doesn't anyone else here have this problem? The same drive in two machines and the same result! None of the ridiculous fixes on the rest of the internet appear to work (short of upgrading). Updating some ACPI related module or the kernel itself may be the only thing that will work.

Well maybe you could do some research and see if its possible to build a
up-to-date RTAI enhanced single core kernel that does not need a LAPIC
This might help others that have older motherboards...

If I knew how to do that correctly, I wouldn't be on this forum! That's what you developers are here for.

There are no developers that hang out here on the forum... only users trying to help other users.
