I've opened up gcode.txt and I've not been able to find the offending character. I tried gedit and ghex. In ghex I see a 2E 0A at the end of line 647.
What can I use to view this?

Emacs works nicely ;^)
you can flip the buffer back an forth between fundamental and hexl modes.
