KVM Switches (DVI and USB)

Has anyone had any experience with using a KVM switch with EMC2/Ubuntu?

In my shed, I have one monitor (DVI or VGA input), a USB keyboard and mouse.

My PC for LinuxCNC has a DVI or VGA output.

My Raspberry Pi has an HDMI output (equivalent to DVI)

I want to stick to one monitor, keyboard and mouse for both computers.

Can Ubuntu get upset when live connecting and disconnecting DVI and USB devices?

Cheers, Scott

Hi

When I was testing a RPi. I had it plugged into the HDMI slot on my monitor and the main computer plugged into VGA, so I didn't use a switch, just selected the input from the monitor.

Ubuntu should be pretty much plug and play regards USB HID, you can unplug and replug a mouse in no problem and you can even plug another keyboard in and it will take input from both.

The image on your RPi may not be so forgiving, depends what it is, give it a go B)

regards

Thanks Arc Eye,

I do use 2 PC's at work on the same monitor as you described, one DVI, one VGA... But it means having 2x Keyboard & Mouse on my desk which can get messy at times (typing into the wrong computer!)

Also, the difference beteeen VGA and DVI on terms if sharpness, user friendliness etc makes VGA feel very old hat (which it is... It's amazing VGA has stood the test of time as long as it has!)

I'll have a play with the Pi to see if it recognises devices being disconnected and re connected repeatedly.

Just wanted to be sure brgore I bought a switch that thrre are no known issues with LinuxCNC.

Could unplugging and reconnecting during machining cause a mess?

Thanks, Scott

ssh -X might suit. That way you can run the Pi headless. Then keyboard/mouse input simply goes to the selected window.

I do it a lot.
