Hey I stuck my foot in it again

System is Linux ant 3.4-9-rtai-686-pae #1 SMP PREEMPT Debian 3.4.55-4linuxcnc i686 linuxcnc 2.8

I was trying to install ntp (time keeper) and issued the command "aptitude -y install ntp"
and long list of files being removed started streaming down the screen and eventually stop long after I used ^C several times.
A list of the files is attached.

Now when I boot the computer it comes to a command line login. I can use startx to get to the normal desktop and linuxcnc runs the last program I was using with no problems.
I've tried apt-get install on some of the programs in the list but get "has no installation candidate" don't know if that's a repo issue.
deb security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src security.debian.org/ wheezy/updates main contrib non-free
deb debian.pkgs.org/7/debian-backports-main contrib non-free
deb http.debian.net/debian wheezy-backports main
deb http.us.debian.org/debian/ wheezy main

Downloaded Linuxcnc version of Debian 7 and can't find any of the files in the iso pool directory.

I am afraid to try ap-get update for fear it might make things even worse.
Anyone have any idea how I can recover these files??

Wheezy has been End of Life for a long time time. The repos need updating.
This page explains it all
wiki.debian.org/DebianWheezy

From your list I'd start with lightdm-gtk-greeter & lightdm to begin with, this should get you back to your login screen.

Is there a way that the list can be feed thru Synaptic, as that's the only way I've found that shows the files available for installation.
Thank you the the prompt answer

Opps: spoke to soon. Synaptic errors out and reports no package available.

Easiest way is to edit your /etc/apt/sources.list file using your favourite editor as the super user.
Here is a howto
wiki.debian.org/SourcesList

And a HOWTO
www.howtoforge.com/using-old-debian-vers...in-your-sources.list

If you search the forum maybe using Wheezy repo or Wheezy EOL you should get some better answers and learn a bit in the process.

After doing all that
run
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install lightdm lightdm-gtk-greeter

That should get you back to having a login screen.
Sometimes you just have to edit files by hand.

Well I finally found an answer for which repository to use.
Wheezy repo
Wheezy EOL

List of my /etc/apt/sources.list
deb archive.debian.org/debian/ wheezy main non-free contrib
deb-src archive.debian.org/debian/ wheezy main non-free contrib

deb archive.debian.org/debian-security/ wheezy/main non-free contrib
deb-src archive.debian.org/debian-security/ wheezy/main non-free contrib

From
www.howtoforge.com/using-old-debian-vers...in-your-sources.list

Now I am thinking of using a shell script to feed the list of removed files thru apt-get to reinstall most of them.

Thanks

The big question is why did it remove those packages.
Personally I refrain from the -y switch, I like to check what apt-get wants to do.

Not being very use to debian I am not going to chase down why aptitude decided to delete the files. I've spent enough time running down rabbit holes for one 24 hour period.

I ran several files thru the apt-get to make sure they installed ok then turned the script loose. I'll get a report tomorrow how it all went and go from there.

Thanks again.
