EMC2 works under Ubuntu 8.04 but not 10.04

Have a Pentium4 P.C. on which EMC2 runs fine under Ubuntu 8.04 but not 10.04.
Would appreciate any ideas as to why this might be and what I could do to correct this problem.

This seems to becoming more common (on older hardware?)

I wonder if the problem has to do with changing from grub to grub2 in 8.04 to 10.04 and maybe how it determined the computer's installed hardware.
There is some info out there, and I see it was asked on the mailing list.

I went back to 8.04 for now, after all if it aint broken why fix it.
