Would an M0 pause command in the G-code be a solution?

I am not sure what your point is there? That panel is based on outputs from PyVCP to G-code (via motion.analog-in-NN pins) and was replaced by: forum.linuxcnc.org/41-guis/26550-lathe-macros?start=150#82743

I don't think that there is a way to read a G-code variable from the Python interface either, so GladeVCP isn't the answer.
