7I96S and Lathe? was created by Holzwurm56
Hello,
I want to use my lahte with LinuxCnc and a Mesa 7I96S. Its possible to use 2 MPGs with this Mesacard? So that i can turn
simply pieces in a conventionell mode?
Thanks
Hans

The 7i96S has only one encoder counter, and that is a high-speed one with index reset, which would be best used for the spindle (you definitely need a spindle encoder on a CNC lathe)
You could use some of the digital inputs and a software encoder counter. This will work OK with an MPG.
On my own lathe I fitted a 7i73 inside the apron, this counts the pulses from the two MPGs and also from a 3rd encoder used for jog increment selection. It also reads the limit switches and sends all this data back to the controller on a single CAT5 cable.
If you think that you will need more than the 11 inputs on the 7i96S board than an alternative to the 7i73 is the 7i84. This has two MPG counters. (On my lather I used these for feed and spindle override)
There is the possibility of getting a custom firmware with MPG counters on the 25-pin expansion connector pins, but I don't know if that exists.
So, to answer your question, the only way to add extra encoders to the 7i96 is by using 4 inputs as encoder channels and using the software counter in HAL. But the 7i96 has a smart-serial expansion connector that can be connected to a daughter board to add more IO of various types.

The 7I96 and 7I96S support up to 4 MPGs on isolated inputs
0 through 7.
(of course you lose 2 general purpose inputs per MPG)
7I96S MPG related pins:

Many thanks for your fast answer. I use now my lathe with Mach3 and 2 LPTs, but i want to retrofit to a newer controller. Threading works
not good with Mach3. Normally the 11 inputs are more than enough. Now i use 4 inputs for the 2 mpgs, 2 inputs for the endswitches
(one per axe), one for the spindle index. Motor, cooling and programstart with the keyboard.
