A PCI board is always faster than using software step generation and the parallel port. Mesa and Pico have PCI hardware and I'm sure they can fill you in with specifics.

What kind of motor drives and what kind of machine do you have?
Interface options range from simple parallel port interfaced step drives
to multi axis servo systems with 100's of I/O points
The best hardware really depends on what you are doing
