I will be connecting 3 SSI encoders 250mA max to 7i74 + 3 sserial cards 40mA each. Total comes to 870mA. And at some point a 4th SSI encoder will be added so it goes over 1A. That is why I would like to use external 5V power supply for both 7i74 cards I have. So procedure is? :

1. Swap position of W1 and W2 jumpers on 5i25
2. Swap positions of W1 jumpers on 7i74 cards.
3. Connect 5V to TB1 on 7i74's

Would this be good choice for PS www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/tdk-la.../285-1232-ND/1631413

I do not know about MESA hardware and jumpers on them, but that power supply should be sufficient. And it is DIN rail mount, i like rail mounts a lot.
You can also use a phone charger for that, but not cheap chinese ones, they are messed up. Most of them are capable of 5V/1A and newer ones 5V/2A, but also beware of the newest ones for fast charging, they can go up to 8 or 9V, so avoid them.

Yes that's correct

jumper both 7I74s for ext power (W1 down )
jumper 5i25 for no cable power (W1 and W2 down)
supply 5V power to both 7I74 TB1's

Thank you. I will do this next week. I have another PC now with 2.8 installed so I can test it also.

With the board right side up (TB1 up) pin 1 is on the right (marked +5)
You can also tell pin 1 by looking at the back of the board (it has a square pad)
