Homing Index Pulse with 7i76?

Hey guys,

I ran into the next obstacle I had overlooked while deciding to remove the 7i77 from the equation in my build.

For homing the machine I want to use the index pulse method for accurate home positioning, and had not considered if the 7i76 would be able to handle that functionality or not? My field power is 24v and I'm sure my encoder voltage is 5v so I'm trying to imagine how it would be possible? Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Chris

does the drive have a index output?
in general its not a great idea to tap into servo drives encoder signals

yes, the drive has a dedicated encoder output, the drive terminals for the axis servos in this schematic are on upper right hand side. those are seperate from the dedicated encoder plugs running to the servos themselves.

My friend CLint who is running the exact same servos and drive with your hardware is using the index pulse with a 7i77, i was just trying to determine if it could be done using just the 7i76?

here is a shot from the manual:

well... it is possible but only if you add full encoder interfaces to LinuxCNC

The stepgen hardware has the option of an index input but unfortunately this
is not supported by the LinuxCNC driver (and the only supported home to index hardware is via encoder)

so pretty much just go ahead and use the 7i77?
