That is how i do retrofits, also. Plenty of flexibility and the added bonus of wiring the E-stop input to a 7i70 and the E-stop output to the 7i71 so if anything is wrong, the machine can not go out of E-stop, it has to loop through all of the cards for it to work.

If you used even one io from any of 7i70 or 7i71 in hal and the card is not there Linuxcnc wont even start so no need to think about estop

Redundancy ! :)

he shoudt first guessing what he needs
if he uses inductiv BX switches he can spare PINS almost down to one
BUT personly i LIKE to use one pin for one Signal
NOT at double cost
all 3/2 inductive to X one pin
or as it is your mashine XYZ 9/6 to one pin you know if trouble what/where and hopfully why

Yeah that needs a lot of IO's.
How many drives and how many VFD does it have ?
Most probably that does not need 7 axis control, it should be 3 or 4 if it has a circular saw that changes angles or a 90 degree drill/mill for side channels.
Usually they have a single VFD for 2 or 3 spindles, some have one for each spindle.
Does it have a tool changer ?
How many drills ?

Jesi to ti pored masine ?
Translation:
Is that you beside the machine ?
