If I went 7i76 and didn't go with a 5i25 but straight from my parallel port, would I be able to still utilise all the 7i76's inputs and outputs. With stepconf I would be limited to just the spare pins on the PP but not sure if this is different with PNCconf.
My new motors and drives arrived today. I went for the easy servo from Leadshine.
Jools
EDIT
Think I'll just go 7i76E if this will do what I want.

No, you cannot use a 7I76 with a plain parallel port
You can use a 5I25 to drive a parallel port BOB but in general you
cannot use Mesa BOBs with parallel ports

There is a lot of serial communications going on between the 5i25 and 7i76.
It is interesting to speculate whether a speciallised driver could bit-bang the parallel port to control the 7i76. I think it could be done, but would be very silly.

So to close this out is a 7i76e capable of what I want; which is:
4 axis servo-
4 axis spindle encoders with 1000ppr Im not running these very fast
1 spindle encoder
PWM spindle control
Then will need 6 extra inputs for fault and limits, home etc
outputs are covered.
Really asking to make sure the encoders are covered.
Cheers

They are not, 7i76E has a single encoder input for the spindle, another 2 encoders can be added for MPG.
32 inputs and 16 outputs should be enough.
There are other Mesa cards that can do what you need, but you should wait for someone more experienced with them.
Regards,
Tom.

				Cheers Tom
I had thought that my self once I posted it but these cards are bloody confusing to the lay person (read idiot). I was still hunting through this thread looking when you messaged :-0
PCW said a 7i96 with a 7i85S would do the trick. That's the same price so hopefully he'll be on soon to confirm that for me.

For analogue-controlled servos the 7i77 is the most common choice (connected to the PCI bus via 5i25 or to the PCIe bus with a 6i25)
For step-dir + encoders then 7i85S seems to be the most common suggestion.
