Mesa 5i25/7i77 startup help

I have setup many parallel and 5i25/7i76 systems. This is my first 7i77 and I am having some difficulties.

I could not get it to start Linuxcnc after running pncconfig. DMESG said something to the effect that I was asking for 3 encoders and only 2 were available. After checking pncconfig and jumpers many times with no sucess this is where I'm at:

I have an older Intel i3 based HP computer with the 5i25 installed with W1 and W2 down. The supplied 25pin cable connected to the 7i77. The only connections on the 7i77 are 24v at TB2 and 5v at TB1 with W5 in the right hand position. When I follow this procedure from another thread,

******************************************************************************
Install just the 5i25 and power up the PC. Open a terminal window.
halrun
loadrt hostmot2
loadrt hm2_pci
loadrt threads
addf hm2_5i25.0.read thread1
addf hm2_5i25.0.write thread1
start

You can now start to look at the HAL pins and even make the LEDs on the 5i25 change state.
show pin
setp hm2_5i25.0.led.CR01 1
setp hm2_5i25.0.led.CR01 0

If you then attach the 7i77 you should see more pins, and if you supply field power to power-up the GPIO on the 7i77 you should see even more. You should also be able to set analogue outputs and read pin values too.
***********************************************************************************************

everything works good until the last paragraph when I connect the 7i77 and run "show pin" I get no additional pins.

All other jumpers are in the default position.

Any and all assitance is appreciated.

Thanks,
Kent

If you did not get the 5I25 and 7I77 together as a set, the 5I25 most likely does
not have the correct firmware installed for a 7I77.

To correct this you would need to run the mesaflash command with the correct bitfile:

sudo mesaflash --device 5i25 --write 5i25_7i77x2.bit

and then

sudo mesaflash --device 5i25 --reload

The 5i25_7i77x2.bit file is in the 5i25.zip support archive at Mesa

The latest mesaflash is here:

Thanks for the quick reply. I also am leaning toward the incorrect firmware, however i purchased the Plug-and-Go Kit about a month ago and then a second one last week and I have tried both 5i25s and 7i77s together as the kits were supplied and also mixed the kits together.

Should I still try to flash them?

I would, reporting only 2 encoders available sounds like a 7I76x2 configuration

Ok may or may be relevant but I did notice that the "show pins" command listed 2 encoders and 9 step generators.

I am not a computer guy. I see 20 or 30 files in the link and no .zip file and it says something about installing additional software???

I have no internet access in the shop. 1 file i can handle but not installing packages.

There are mesaflash installation instructions on the bottom of the page, but you would need internet access to fetch the source files.

Do you possibly have mesaflash installed?

Ok this morning I loaded up linuxcnc on an old office computer and I was able to flash both 5i25s. I have not connected the 7i77 yet but "Show pins" gives me plenty of encoders so I should be on the right track. Motor tuning is going to be fun to learn (not) but thats next.

Thank you for your help and you may want to look into this so other can avoid flashing. I bought 2 Plug-and-Go kits 3 or 4 weeks apart and both came with the wrong firmware.

Thank you again - LOVE your products - Its so nice nice to be able to continue to run my machines that I paid good money for long after the OEM stops supporting them or goes under.

I will look into this to try to see how you ended up with incorrect firmware

If you still have the 5I25 packaging, can you see if there is a color dot on the label?

You can always try ethercat instead of mesa. Just an idea to get you to the next level.
I love the contributions of pcw. But there is another more powerful world.
Just like window's is a car and linux is a semi.

So far i have seen ethercat stuff that can do 250 updates per second, some merely 100, while Mesa does by default 1000 and i did push it to 4000 and it never failed. Is there any ethercat that can do more ?
