I've just bought a 7i73 and connected it to my 7i96.  I have moved jumpers W6 and W6 to up to terminate (i only have this one sserial card).  Nothing on the 7i73 board lights up (LEDs).  Is that what I should expect?

if I run
mesaflash --device 7i96 --addr 10.10.10.10 --sserial

I get
SSLBP port 0:
SSLBP Version: 1.43
SSLBP channels: 2
SSLBP Baud Rate:  2500000

Is this right?

I have checked that I have power to the male RJ45 and I have about 4.86v.

what should i have in my HAL? i've included this "sserial_port_0=21xxxx"

in Loadrt HOSTMOT2 statement and set the number of sserial ports to 1.  Linuxcnc loads.
You don't have to do anything to connect the 7i73 to the 7i96. The --serial option is to use serial interface to connect to board, only for boards with multiple interfaces (7i43, 7i90, 7i64).

W5 and W6 set the Ethernet address of the 7i96.
10.10.10.10 W5 Down W6 Up
192.168.1.121 W5 Down W6 Down

sorry, i should have said I've set the W6 and W7 jumpers on the 7i73 (not the 7i96).

I've tried to use the latest version of your config tool, but I can't get it to launch. It throws this error "Invalid desktop entry file: '/home/pi/.local/share/applications/7i96 Configurator.desktop'"

I have uninstalled the previous version before installing the new one. I've even tried uninstalling and reinstalling you new one but still no joy.
scrub that, the menu option is there even after I've uninstalled so i assume that is an old one that isn't pointing at anything.

Take care with the wiring pinouts. Mesa gives you pinouts for T568B and my cable was T568A (or vice versa)

I've checked, mine is T568B. Should any of the LEDs on the board light up when i plug it in?

With no configuration running CR1 should be solid red CR2 off, with your configuration running CR1 off, CR2 flashing green.

Thanks both of you. Im one step further forward. Turns out 2 of the data conductors had snapped at the screw terminal (a hazard with solid cored cat6 cable). I now have a solid red on CR1. And CR2 is off.

How do I know what to write in the hal file? I currently have added sserial_port_0=21xxxx to the hostmot2 config line but that is just something I found in a post on here. Is the right, or should the '21XXX' be specific to an address on my board?

You don't need to add anything to see the smart serial card pins in hal. I'm actually working on the 7i73 tab of my 7i96 Configuration Tool...

What John means that once you start linuxcnc and open a config, it should light up green as described in the manual
