If you plan on gutting the existing control, you might not need schematics although it would help for sure.
Take some pictures of the innards and post them here so we can have a look, plenty of experienced users here able to figure out a lot just from looking at pictures.

Yeah, that may be true. I'm more thinking of the mechanical bits - what's the correct way to disassemble things to clean/replace them, etc. I'll work on getting some pictures ASAP, thanks!
