Very slow loading files

Hi All,

I've been using 2.5.1 (just saw 2.5.2) for a while and having good success with simple files.
I just tried an engraving project with a 5mb gCode file and it took 15 minutes to load and then another 15 minutes each to touch off X Y and Z.

I'm running an Intel Desktop board D850GB with a P4 at 1.4g and .5gb of RAM.

I see talk about slowness caused by graphics drivers.
The system report says nVidia NV17 GeForce MX440 driver in use.

If I look at the system monitor when LinuxCNC is running the processor is maxed out although it appears I still have free memory.

Any ideas? Do I need a faster system?

thanks
Steve

Hi

500MB is not much memory and 5MB of GCode is a lot of code
I would use 1GB RAM min

The biggest load in this instance will be rendering the plot into Axis.
This will test both processor power and the graphics system

Try using the preview control and see if this speeds everything up
linuxcnc.org/docs/2.5/html/gui/axis.html...axis-preview-control

regards

PS

Do I need a faster system?

Probably, 1.4 is pretty low powered, but I would try turning the preview off and see what happens.
Then perhaps try using the vesa driver instead of nvidia, to eliminate that side of things.

I have a slow system so on larger files I'll touch off on the default axis screen, or a very small file.
Then load the larger one so you only have to wait once.

Ah now there's a good idea!

I guess a new motherboard is in my future.
