Logitech pendant usage

I configured a Logitech 310 game pad to controlling a Bridgeport. I like it much however, it takes 2 hands to operate it. When jogging I find that many times I need a hand to hold a magnifying glass to see what is happening in more detail.
I wonder if I change my hal setup so I don't have to hold down a button for the size of the increment while jogging with a joy button would be an improvement. Does anyone have any comments from experience wether having just one physical input to move an axis is safe as far as damage to work.
