Lathe encoder connection

Hi to all
i am thinking to make my first setup with a linuxcnc (my previous setups had to do with arduino and grbl )

i have in stock a cheap mach3 board and a vfd for my DIY lathe machine.

i was wondering where do i have to connect the A/B wires coming out from my rotary speed encoder in order to be able to use my lathe for cutting threads.

Thanks in advance

You will also need a Z (index) pulse. If the encoder does not have one then this can be sourced from any once-per-rev sensor on the spindle. A proximity sensor picking up a keyway, for example.

The ABZ signals would go through the BoB to an encoder counter module in the LinuxCNC HAL layer.
Then the position and speed virtual pins from the encoder module are connected to the LinuxCNC motion module.

Thanks for your answer.
Ok about ABZ pulses.

So these three signal can i connect them to any free available pin in the BoB ?
or have to be a special pin/port from parallel cable ?

the encoder counter module is something that is declared in software in linux cnc or has to be hardware device? (i am guessing in software)

i know that maybe are very silly questions and in time i would figure out it by my self but my goal is to see if i have everything i need (hardware) in order to make my setup... or if i missing anything, then order it before i start to experiment with my setup.

thanks

My hardware until now:
1) An old pc (celeron) with parallel port in mainboard,
2) Nema23 stepper drivers
3) Nema23 motors
4) Rotary encoder (ab signal)
5) hall effect sensor or proximity sensor for Z signal
6) Chinese 5axis BoB aka Mach3
7) VFD driver for my rotor
8) USB to RS485 485 Converter Adapter (for vfd control)

Any free _input_ pin, yes.

The LinuxCNC HAL layer lets you connect any parallel port pin to any LinuxCNC module. (or, in fact, to more than one)
