I think there was a lot of mud in the water before I got here.
Ok, the drive in use is the V 4 version in this manual (with 5v/24v switch)
www.omc-stepperonline.com/download/DM542T_V4.0.pdf
The correct wiring is shown in Figure 4 in section 4.1 exactly as I said earlier.
The existing steplen parameters should be fine for a DM542. My config used 500,500,2500,2500 with them so I do not expect the change to 5000 will have any affect.
There are some very  low max velocities set in the ini file 4 ipm??? Get these up to a more reasonable value. say 400-500 rpm (my DM542s could do 750 rpm
Back to basics
Next question: Do you have holding torque with the motor powered up?
If not follow Tommys advice.

Hmm, this may be an incompatibility with the mesa 7i76e and the DM542T (V4) driver from Steppersonline.
Read this:

Maybe its a PCW issue.

Finally you are listening ! In the op's case, the one I am working with. linked me to the wrong drives ie DM556
and did not tell me he had changed the drives.

I now have his config working

In ini file Display
MAX_LINEAR_VELOCITY = 1.000000 changed to 20

in X axis
MAX_VELOCITY = 4.33333333333 changed to 15
MAX_ACCELERATION = 30.0

Joint 0
MAX_VELOCITY = 4.33333333333 changed to 15

STEPGEN_MAXVEL = 5.42 changed to 20
STEPGEN_MAXACCEL = 37.50

I would also change. It dose not do any harm
DIRSETUP = 2500 to 5000
DIRHOLD = 2500 to 5000

In the Y axis I had to remove the -sign from HOME_SEQUENCE = -1 in both joints
This is so I could jog the X axis (as with the -sign you have to home the machine first before it will jog)

So only test this with the X axis or the gantry will rack

This is working with single ended. If it works then you can try differential and see if it is ok.

Clive, do you have the same drive? I did not realise that.
I don't like using single ended when it can be done just using step and dir pins because it obfuscates things in my view. Simple is good.

Yes I always use differential when I can but it does not always work then you have to do it single ended.

Not all bobs will take differential .

Ok back on track please see forum.linuxcnc.org/38-general-linuxcnc-q...i76e?start=70#232267

To be safe unplug the drives from the gantry axis so that it won't rack
then follow the instructions re: removing the minus sign from the two joints

I have it working here :) From now on you have to hand edit the hal and ini files
