The 4030 has pretty high input current requirements,
so may need single ended wiring (I think you indicated
that you had this wiring but was not sure)
7I96S DRIVE
+5V STEP+,DIR+
STEP+ NC
DIR+ NC
STEP- STEP-
DIR- DIR-
You can also test operation by jogging in either direction
and checking the the DIR polarity changes appropriately.

i wired it like you said, no change. when i hook a multimeter to the 7i96s, i dont get movement in voltage while i went thru config and set the motor tune to move up down 1in with no pause.
how do i check for a bad board?
i have tried two different motherboards, and an add on network card, powered the mesa with a benchtop power supply. im deep in the mud.

So you are saying that running LinuxCNC, you jogged in either
direction and the direction signal for the jogged axis does not change?

i have been playing just with z axis thus far, and no there has been zero movement of the motor or voltage change with a volt meter checking the step connection on the 7i96s.

ok, i was having a very very blonde moment. i had z axis set to step3 position, but the board starts at zero; so no power lol
it seriously still didnt work when i hooked it to "step2". WTH. i do see power change with jog, but no stepper movement.

I would not expect a voltage change on the step connection
only the direction connection.
Did you check the 7I96S direction pin when running
LinuxCNC and jogging in either direction?

voltage from ground to dir - changes in one direction and step - to dir - changes in the other; i believe im remembering that right.
goes from 4.9v to .24v
goes from 4.9v to .24v

If the direction signal from the 7I96S changes, that means that communication
and the physical direction output is working so the problem is likely elsewhere
Can you try 10000 for the step-on time?
Also I assume the drive enable inputs are not wired (these disable the drive if powered)

please assume nothing. i rather know. i have nothing but the z drive wired to the 7i96s. if you are talking about the ENA ports, no those are left alone. i only disconnected the BOB of uc100/mach3 to connect the mesa board. drives to motor wiring havent changed.
i will try the 10k step on time.
