I might be that you used the -d option after the name which is a loadusr option and not with the options that get passed to gus_vfd so it might just get ignored there.

loadusr -Wn spindle-vfd gs2_vfd -r 9600 -p none -s 2 -n spindle-vfd -d /dev/ttyUSB3

try:
loadusr -Wn spindle-vfd gs2_vfd -d /dev/ttyUSB3 -r 9600 -p none -s 2 -n spindle-vfd

Problem solved. Whatever issue I was having last week was solved by starting over from scratch today. The issue I was having today was the baud rate. I believe your example is mislabeled. You say to set the transmission speed in the GS2 using P9.01 to 9600 using setting 02. In my GS2, 9600 is actually setting 01, 02 is 19200. Maybe it has changed since you put up the example? Shame on me for not double checking that for myself.
Thanks for the help. Your documentation really is a great guide

That is a typo in the manual, my brain started counting at 1 and not 0.

I'm glad you got it going. You will love that drive, you can uplug it and plug it back in and it just works.

Where did you end up putting the -d option on the loadusr line?

It did end up working without moving the -d option. It is still right at the end

Ok, that was a SWAG on my part. I was pulling hairs at that point.

Glad you got it working.

Now that we know a USB to serial device works with the gs2 component, how do you discover the address of the serial port? I'd like to add something in the manual about this.

Sorry for taking all day to get back, I was busy tuning the servo drives, and actually got to run the first program today! :woohoo:
I'm new to Linux in general, so I'm not 100% sure on that (I had some in-house help with it, and I couldn't keep up with what he was doing). From what I could gather, he did a printout of all the tty devices and found the one the GS2 was on. Because we used the 4 to 1 serial to USB adapter, the 4 serial ports on the adapter were called USB0-USB3.
I hope that helps. If not, I'll see if I can get him to show me again tomorrow.
