Hi all, recently my pc running version 2.8.2 broke down and i had to replace it and installed 2.9.
Thankfully I kept a copy of all my files, so that helped me out a lot. After a couple of hours i got my setup to work again.
The only thing that doesn't work is tool measurement. The option in the advanced settings tab keeps getting greyed out.The line in preference file gets changed to when loading LinuxCNC: use_toolmeasurement = False

Usually when I did a manual tool change, the spindle moved to a certain location and than a popup shows up to change the tool. After clicking ok, the actual tool measurement is performed.
Now the machine doesn't move, it just shows the popup.

(Homing, moving, starting the spindle all works. )

If a PC running Linux breaks, try putting the old hard drive in the new computer.

It actually works perfectly 99% of the time!

Why did you install 2.9?

Which version of 2.9? 2.9.4?

How does your PC control the machine?

I had a pretty hard time finding a pc with a parallel port. I don’t use a mesa card

The new pc is a dell optiplex 980 That is a very compact unit. The old HDD doesn’t seem to fit in the housing.

I use pcloud for gcode synchronization and I just couldn’t open the site on 2.8. So I decided to install te latest version of LinuxCNC

swapping the HDD gave some issues with the drivers for graphics card.
just gave it another try by installing 2.8.4 and somehow it sort of worked.

even pcloud installed
the issue is been solved for now, but I do find it confusing that an 'upgrade' to 2.9 breaks some functionality

Why do you need a PC with a parallel port?
PCIe parallel port cards are great and very cheap.

I have an extra SUNIX parallel port card; they work quite well for CNC control.

However, it uses a highly inefficient 7805 voltage regulator, guess you get what you pay for!

I'm glad you managed to fix it.

Define "sort of worked".

2.8, 2.9, upcoming 2.10, have no major changes so everything works on all of them, but toolchangers, probes and routines, pendants, are not standard equipment and there is a huge variety of them, so might have issues sometimes.
Even configs from 2.5 and 2.7 work on new version as the included wizard does a good job of changing the required hal and ini entries, but this also fails sometimes as it is impossible to account for all the hardware that LinuxCNC can control.

While i am at it, the included wizards, be it changing from old to new versions, or StepConf or PncConf, are magnificent, and i am fully aware of how much work went into them, so whoever worked on them, thank you very much, i am very grateful, although i rarely use them as i am used to editing files manually, but when i do need them they work perfectly.

Your reasoning is somewhat flawed.

First of all, you don't need a PC with a parallel port, you can just install a PCIe parallel port card in some PC.

The HDD does not technically need to fit into the housing; you can just plug the HDD into power and SATA while the HDD still physically outside the computer.

You can always dual-boot LinuxCNC and some other OS for your GCode Syncing.

For example, you could install Ubuntu Desktop 24.04 LTS or GhostBSD or something to your new drive for non-CNC stuff (like pcloud) and plug in the old drive with the original, working LinuxCNC install.

You can download Gcode files to your CNC drive from the other OS.

A virtual machine, the scp command, or simply copying gcode files downloaded on another computer from a USB key could also be a solution

You should be able to fix the graphics driver issue without reinstalling, though reinstalling is often a good solution.

However, if you want your machine to work as it did before, using your old install on your old HDD is probably the go-to method.
