EMC2 installation was created by nurchi
Hello everyone

I am new to this forum and also relatively new to the world of linux.

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 and was trying to install EMC manually, but unsuccessful...

I get error upon error, when one is fixed, another pops up, even Mighty Google was unable to help me.

I was thinking this would benefit everyone if one of the developers just takes some time to install the latest Ubuntu
and then install EMC2 manually, explaining every major step and showing us - noobs, howto deal with certain things.

For now, I'll just download the LiveCD.

Thanks a lot.

Try Ubuntu 10.04, and you will be happy.
EMC2 is typically very easy to install, with the live CD, as well as with the installation script on an existing Ubuntu installation.

11.04 is not (yet) supported by EMC2:

EDIT: John is right (as usual), 11.04 will never be supported, next LTS version will probably.:)

The developers only use LTS versions of Ubuntu for EMC2 so 10.04 is the latest one and is still supported by Ubuntu.

For those folks that have unlimited time on their hands could perhaps use this page as a guide for unsupported versions of Ubuntu.

Have Fun!

Downloaded and installed 10.04 from this site.

Installed flawlessly, except wifi usb stick is not working :)
It's a Patriot Wireless with Realtek RTL8191SU chip (exact model: PCBOWAU2-N).

Searched forums everywhere, followed tons of instructions, no luck.

Well, I'll consider looking into another wifi unit then.

Thanks.

P.S.
It did work under 11.04 :)

Got the WiFi working:
ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10926132
(If I just placed firmware in the right folder, maybe I wouldn't have to use ndis, but it works, so life is good :))

Had another problem though, EMC2 would completely freeze my system, only mouse moved, nothing else...

I got to turn the motors on Fireball V90 CNC using stepconf in test mode, but EMC2 would freeze my system and I just had to turn off the computer.

After searching Mighty Google for about 2 minutes, turned out that EMC for some odd reason did not like the video card, had that replaced and everything runs smoothly now.

I would like to thank everyone for your help and support and hope this helps another noob like myself :)

You might have been able to use software-only OpenGL as an alternative:
