Ubuntu 10.04.3LTS release and EMC2.4.6 was created by grey1beard
As I am heading towards a clean install as part of my present problem solving routine , I noticed yesterday evening the announcement of the release of 10.04.3LTS.
Questions.
At the moment, update manager is not offering this to my laptop, where I have 10.04, only an upgrade to 10.10, whereas my machine system, which is running 8.04LTS is offered 10.04.3.
1. Do I try to get the laptop up to 10.04.3, and if so how ? I can only find the route for a fresh install cd, rather than an upgrade, and I'd like to try this first, before taking the whole shebang down
2. If I now download the Live-CD, will it have the latest versions on it, of both 10.04 and EMC2 ?

Only one LiveCD was released so it does not have the latest release.

Hi,
Unfortunately, because EMC is most usually installed in the form of a bundle with a Ubuntu distro, people get the impression that
the Ubuntu version number and EMC version number are synonymous.
This is not so, for instance my 2 workshop computers have 8.04 installed but are running the latest git pull of EMC 2.6~pre in a RIP install.
I installed 10.4 (EMC 2.4.6) on my house computer for simulation and testing, but only because 8.x.x versions of Ubuntu would not work with its Intel Quad core mother board.
I have a 2.6~pre RIP installed on that too
Upgrading Ubuntu, does not upgrade EMC and if you are not very careful will stop it working. The first thing an upgrade will do is try to install a later standard Ubuntu kernel, whereas you want to keep the RTAI kernel.
If you want 'Firefox 3000', just install it, trying to upgrade Ubuntu for the sake of having the highest version number, when the previous version worked perfectly well, is a shortcut to insanity.
If you want bleeding edge Ubuntu for some reason, install it on a different partion
My advice, if it works just leave well alone.
regards

Thanks both.
As I said in my op, I only wanted to see what the result was on the laptop, because I am about to do a clean install, so if it was u/s, I had nothing to lose.
As per my other thread, the emc-install.sh route went down the pan, and with no solution offered there, it means the fresh install from the live CD is the way I will go.
With other issues, like having an on-board graphics, on-board sound, and no printer support for my gel printer, I have plenty of room for experiment.
(Probably a padded room )

I'm not sure if 10.04.3 is really different from a 10.04 installation, as long as you keep it updated.
I have several 10.04 and let it update from time to time. I assume thats silently a .3 now.

Hi Gerd,
Yes, a good thought.
I, too, keep my installation updated, and it crossed my mind that it might be so.
Perhaps some great Ubuntu guru might throw confirmation our way

Just had a tip from spcwingo in the Ubuntu forum.
Run lsb_release -a in Terminal.
Mine produced...
So I'm already running it, which is why Update Manager doesn't offer it !!!
