Hi,
I bought this computer: cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&it...geName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
Celeron 1Ghz, 512MB Ram, no floppy, no CD...

Then I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 with EMC preinstalled. But I couldn't get the computer boot from my USB stick.
I created a bootable stick with my ubuntu 11.04 from the 10.04 linuxcnc-image. But when I try to boot,
I always get the message:
"not a com R32 image".

Maybe Ubuntu 10.04 it too new for this old computer?
Or what could I do?

For older hardware you could use the 8.04 LiveCD. Also it is known that some USB sticks don't play well so you might try a different one. Another option is to plug in a CD drive to the computer to load Ubuntu onto your hard drive (I've had to do this on one computer).

and the ever popular google search for "ubuntu livecd usb" gets this page

help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick

Also, if you get to the first screen and see two little things on the screen and press a key you get to a boot up menu where you can check the disk and memory and other things.

A CD/DVD-drive is no option since I don't have one nor a second power-plug for it.
I used this USB stick for ma netbook Windows7 and Ubuntu 10.10 installation as well, so the stick shoult be ok.
I'll try that 8.04 for that old computer. But you don't have any idea what that error message is good for?

Perhaps it's little buggy since that computer may only support USB1 ?

No, you might have to google the error message to see what comes up. Yea, really old hardware may not work like your win7 and 10.10 machines. Dunno if you can take the hard drive over to another machine and install there then move it back to your old computer or not... just thinking out loud.

Funny you should mention that John, but the hard disk swap has worked for me before with 8.04.

I couldn'd start the Live-CD from 8.04. But 6.06 worked fine!
I thought, that the live-cd would be too slow on that pc... but with 6.06 everything worked well.
Now I just run the system to configure it....and got read-errors from the hdd :D
Need a new one before I can go on with EMD2 ;)
