getting started, just was created by mel
Is this the place to ask a "getting started-install" question?

Ubuntu 10.04 installed OK.

Then, I ran emc2-install.sh; seemed OK.

when I run emc, I select sim axis and the machine hangs with a black dot. What to do???

The best way is to use the LiveCD to install EMC.

You might have a graphics problem... or the install script did not work correctly.

I would say the Installing EMC would be a better place for this question.

That sounds like an OpenGL problem.

What happens if you open the sim-tkemc config (which does not use OpenGL)

If that works, then have a look at using software open-GL here:

Yes, I can find some configurations that do work, such as "tkemc" and "mini" and maybe a few others. I guess for where I'm at right now one of these is "good enough", ...

However, just for s's and g's,

You refer me to a place that seems to say to install a part of something called "openGL" whatever that is??? How do I know if it is part of Ubuntu or if I have to get it somewhere?? Either way, how about a clue of how to proceed??
thanks

Hi

It is very simple if you use the Advanced Package manager (AKA Synaptic Package Manager)

Search for and select libgl1-mesa-swx11 for installation

This clashes with the default libgl1-mesa-glx and supporting packages, so you will be asked if you want to remove them.

Confirm and the software based package will be installed and the other now deprecated packages removed.

Then you should be able to run Axis, would not hurt to do a re-boot first.

The plot rendering may be a bit slower, but I am hard pushed to notice the difference on the machine I had to do this to to get camview-emc to work.

That's what we like - a successful outcome in time for Xmas - so you can forget about it for a couple of days

Have a good holiday
