Sure, that will work.
But you need to rebuild the kernel on any linux version you're picking.
We need a rtai patched kernel (www.rtai.org), to be able to compile and run emc2.

So if you start with 9.04, you need to grab the sources from the kernel used in 9.04 (I think 2.6.29 or 30), then patch them according to the instructions from rtai, build a working kernel (usually after 2-3 attempts), and afterwards compile rtai, then grab the emc2 sources and compile/run them.
There are some instructions how to do this in the wiki at wiki.linuxcnc.org, however some might be older (out of date).
