New to Linux and CNC was created by malgazz
Hi
I am so new to this all, so please excuse my ignorance and any stupidity.
I just happened to come across this site while thinking I should re-think loading and trying Linux.
Bordering on the old f#%t side of life, I have finally got the pluck up the courage and am busy doing the deed - downloading Ubuntu!
I have an old laptop that I ran as a navigational chart plotter and communication platform and decided to use it to try out Linux.
To further this I am busy building a router for myself, waiting for some parts to arrive and some are busy being machined.
I also have recently built a new desktop running windows 7 and will keep that as it is as it will cause less confusion with the home government (wife).
My old desktop will eventually be used for running the cnc router, running XP at present, but hope to convert it to a dual boot system with Linux and XP.
Having dived in with both feet, I will need lots of help and direction please.:woohoo:

If your downloading Ubuntu from the Ubuntu site stop! If your downloading the LiveCD from here carry on... if not download the LiveCD from here. LinuxCNC will not run on any flavor of Ubuntu as it requires a real time thread to run.

Hi
I am busy downloading ubuntu 10.04 Lucid from the Ubuntu site.
The laptop's harddrive had crashed and have installed another, which I had formatted with windows7.
When starting up the laptop, it has a message -"boot msg is missing".
I found a programme DBAN, which has been running and seems to have sorted out the l/top.
My 10.04 Lucid download, will still run for a couple of hours, once done and burnt to disk, I will give it a whorl on the laptop and download and load Linux CNC afterwards. Which version should I be downloading?

I assume you just want the pure simulator for your laptop.

wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?LinuxCNC_Pure_Simulator

When your ready to run a machine with LinuxCNC the simple way is to download the LiveCD from this web site. It will install Ubuntu 10.04 and the real time kernel and LinuxCNC. You can not just "download and install" LinuxCNC like a game or other software as it requires a real time kernel. While it is possible to install LinuxCNC and the real time kernel on a stock Ubuntu 10.04 it is not the simple way to get up and going.

There is another user (or perhaps two) in Cape Town. I don't know if that helps at all.

I went to the news, clicked on Ubutu Linux 10.04& Linux cnc live cd.
On the next page, I clicked on live cd and got a redirect to Ubuntu's site.
Downloaded 10.04.4 LTS Lucid from their site.
Only now having read your last post, I see i should have clicked on "EU mirror".
I have got to the stage on my laptop where it says try or install Ubuntu.
Should I rather go back and download the EU mirror.
I am only starting to put my router together and nowhere near the electronics side of things yet.
I still have to purchase the electronics.
Yes any Cape Town contact would be appreciated if they want contact from me !!!!

The EU mirror is the same iso file just hosted on the other side of the pond.

If your laptop gives you lots of realtime errors you can use the pure simulator with no real time to learn the software.
