John me thinks I still got a long way to go with just learning the basics and understanding Linux.
The commands in the link dont mean any thing to me at this stage.
What do you suggest I do: carry on with 10.04.4 from Ubuntu site or wait for the EU mirror with 10.04.4 &Linux???
I Gather you are also suggesting I should run the laptop with the simulator software to give it a try, etc.
The apologese for my ignorance was at the beginning of my posts.
Never was one for forums, spent most of my time at sea on small boats. Now on land, trying to get into something new.

Yes, for your laptop I would just install Ubuntu 10.04 from the Ubuntu site.

Once that is done from the main menu pick Applications > Accessories > Terminal. This will open up what is called a terminal window or command window. You then type in the commands from the link for installing the 10.04 pure simulator. Type one line at a a time and answer Y when it asks you. Wait for each command to complete before typing the next one. When you use the sudo command you will need to know the password you used when you installed Ubuntu. And the laptop will need to be connected to the internet to get the packages it needs to install the pure simulator.
wget http://www.linuxcnc.org/lucid/dists/lucid/linuxcnc2.5-sim/binary-i386/linuxcnc-sim_2.5.1_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i linuxcnc-sim*.deb
sudo apt-get -f install

An ISO is a type of file that is meant to be burned to a CD as an image.

Morning
John hopefully you can help me out once again.
I have 10.04.4LTS Lucid loaded and very impressed.
I always felt Linux was a dreaded lurgie, but I was presently surprised how easy the interface is.
The lurgie part is where does one put these commands etc.
I imagine like the old windows system that had a dos application, there is somewhere to do this.
I would like to get the simulator running.
Question: what happens if at a later stage I would like to run Linux cnc on the laptop. Would I have a conflict or would it run as another program altogether.
Can one have them both on one computer.
Question: are there some things to do when setting up 10.04.4 after it has been loaded.

In my last post I described how to get to the command window.

Typically you don't run LinuxCNC on a laptop to control a machine due to the hardware power saving "features" of a laptop.

There will be a bunch of updates after you install 10.04 and an update prompt will pop up. Do not update the operating system to 11...

I'm not sure I know what "lurgie" is?

while trying to install simulator. The package installer comes up with message
Error: Cannot install 'python-imaging-tk'.
If I do a wiki search there are 4 articles that come up.
I am unsure of which or what to do.
(the dreaded lurgie = gremlins, nightmare, daemons etc) bit of my own slang

It appears to be from the Goon Show:
en.wiktionary.org/wiki/lurgy
I knew what you meant.

Error: Cannot install 'python-imaging-tk'.

That is a valid package.

Assuming it is not a connectivity problem (server busy - down etc) try
sudo apt-get update
from a terminal

This will update your package lists and quite often fixes such problems

Then try sudo apt-get install python-imaging-tk

Hi

That is 5/6 questions and you haven't said whether you were able to download python-imaging-tk

how often should one do a linux update?

apt-get update is not a linux update, it updates the package lists from when the Live CD was made, they have changed since then.

Search the forum re previous advice on updating the system.
You have installed an operating system that will support a CNC control system, not a desktop system. It does not matter if you never update it
and you must certainly never update the kernel or linuxcnc will stop working.

where can one get hold basic linux commands?

Open the Getting Started manual and go to the Linux FAQ sections for a short tutorial on terminal commands.
After that the answer is google what you want to know.

Which Cad/Cam programes can used with linux
Does one run a windows system with their drawing programmes and export them to their linux system.

You need to read and search the forum (search on left uses google and searches documentation too, search at top right just the forum)
There is a complete section on CAD/CAM and the same question was asked last week.

Do these threads every get closed down or do they stay for life.

I think they pretty much persist, there must be a capacity limit but I have no idea what it is.

What does the unsubscribe check box do.

I'll leave you to work that one out!
