It appears that you are correcty about the video cuasing this trouble
I grabed an old vintage Matrox 4Mb video card from my junk box and
instaled it. This works but not well the screen refresh is screwed up
but the live disk now works. I ran a latency test the computer looked
good for linuxcnc use.

The video is still not good enough for regular use but now the nature
of the problem is knowen. I do not have a monitor capable of 1280
x 1024 nor dose the matrox board support that res.

So how do I fix this problem Im not keen on shelving two otherwise
good computers or aquiring another monitor. I would consiter buying
another PCI video card if it would fix this.

Yes, I think a decent newer graphics board should help. 1024 x 768
resolution is probably OK, but you might have to do some tweaking
of the fonts on the Axis display to get it all on the screen at once.
It has been a while since I even had any 1024 wide monitors.
4 MB is just barely workable, unless you turn down the number of
colors.

Once you have the OS installed it is probably possible to get the onboard video working. You might need to install a driver or fiddle with the Xorg.conf settings.

However, the first thing I would try would be a live-disc install with the old video card, then see if it will boot with only onboard video. It is possible that the onboard video is only an issue for the live-CD boot, not for an installed system.

OK I will try that plan. I tried putting the pci video card into the Dell Optiplex
but the Dell BIOS only supports a add on express video card. So diched
that idea.

Grabbed an old Ubuntu 8 live disk shoved it into the Dell and every thing
works correctly as expected. Going to try this on the HP to see if works
also.

So can I use the newer linuxcnc software with the older ubuntu 8 OS
especially if I want to use Mesa 5i25 boards? If so perhaps I will
simply scrap ubuntu 10

tried Ubuntu 8 live disk with the HP Pavilion a1600n at first it appeared
to work except the USB keyboard and mouse stopped working the
system did not crash. If I plugged and unplugged the Ethernet the system responded to this.

Found a fix although I do not comprehend what actually happend
I went into the BIOS and disabled plug & play mode and enabled
the on board video. Now Ubuntu 8 live disk now works correctly.

No, LinuxCNC requires a kernel patched with the real time option.
A standard kernel can be used for simulation, only.
You can get really nice ATI graphics cards for PCI express for
$9 or so on eBay.

I am using the ubuntu 8.04.4 ver that was used to support EMC2
so it has the real time patch.

In that case yes, you can use both 2.5.3 and the current "Master" development version.

Excellent! while Im on the subject of ubuntu 8 I tried to update
the OS using the synaptic package manager there were several
errors reported as shown below. If I have to use Ubuntu 8 it would
be good to keep as current as practical. I do not know how to
proceed in correcting these failures.

If you upgrade the OS you loose LinuxCNC and the realtime kernel.
