Error on 10.04 LTS was created by flasher
Hi guys,

I've freshly installed 10.04 LTS + Linuxcnc, for the first time.
My computer is quite old: ThinkPad T23, 768MB ram.

Ubuntu works smoothly and I'm very happy about it.
But when I try to run Linuxcnx there is an error & a crash. I can see the first "Select configuration" window, I make the selection and when I confirm it it crashes.
I'm attaching the log.

Can you help me?
It's my first time on linux and would really appreciate the help.

thanks
matej

The problem is here:

[ 0.000000] Local APIC disabled by BIOS -- you can enable it with "lapic"
[ 0.000000] APIC: disable apic facility

Try the advice here:

Thanks mate.
But it didn't do the trick.
I have made the correction nad changed the line to: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash lapic"

In the error log it still says :
[ 0.000000] Local APIC disabled by BIOS -- you can enable it with "lapic"

something else I could do?

thanks a lot,
matej

I don't suppose that the Local APIC is actually disabled in the BIOS?

Otherwise your options are to install the 8.04 version of the LiveCD, which gives you an old (but OK) version of Ubuntu, and a version of LinucxCNC that you can upgrade to at least the current release version, or you could see if the solution lies the other way, with a newer kernel:

On an older computer 8.04 might run linuxcnc better than 10.04 anyway.
You can burn an 8.04 disc, boot from it and try the latency test before going much further.
Also keep in mind a notebook may have more issues running linuxcnc than a desktop.
This is a bit dated but take a look here...

Just to add my 2-cents I've found that Linuxcnc is extremely 'hardware' sensitive. I've done about 12 installs over the past two years on a variety of computers and some have worked perfectly while others have had no end of problems.
Unfortunately I'm not a computer guy so I can't explain the reasons. I started just buying old used computers since they are cheap and when I get a good solid installation with low latency I'll put it into service. At the present time I'm having very good luck on almost any type of Dell system including the older laptops with a real parallel port on the back. Toshibas and Sony have been non-starters so far. I try to use systems with Intel processors but I've had some good luck on systems with AMD chips. Wish I knew more about the in and outs so I could help out.
