i did a fresh install to 2.7 instead of upgrading from 2.5.x
(downloaded the .iso from getting started guide, used universal usb installer {in windoz}
to make a live usb. formatted the disk to fat 32 ...or ext2 ...or ext4 sorry can't remember  )

it kept giving : install failed. step: installing the system.
tried to figure out how to do a md5sum to check the live usb, (.iso checked ok)
but gave up after ~2 hours of not finding any useful explanation of how to
execute the check on the md5sum.txt that i can only find in on non Linux computers.
the " md5sum -c md5sum.txt " command doesn't work and i cant figure out how to direct
it to the proper location so it can.

(not really interested in learning how to do that today if it's not necessary for install)

so i tried a safe mode install from the live usb, which worked...
except its identical to the live install (Xfce ?) but will save things to the hard disk.
i would like to have all the features i did with the full install of 2.5.x

next step i know how to try is format the disk and try graphical install again.
sorry if I've left out any reliant info.

wondering what i should try to do next ?

The md5sum is only to check the iso.

You might be better off keeping Ubuntu 10.04 if your computer is a bit aged...

Can you be specific about where you failed? We can not guess what your doing or seeing...

I've installed with both a USB stick and DVD following the install instructions with no errors...

sorry for the delay had to move photos around and reboot to check computer specs.

i took these photos with my phone
when i tried again to install and tried to continue without installing the system
to see what happened.

i don't think i have a specific point it happed at maybe 1/3rd of the way through.

it was at the graphical install step installing the system.
I'm not sure what else i can tell you.
maybe you can tell me how to find the info you looking for.

computer is a dell dimension 4700 3.2ghz 2.5GB 500GB hard drive.

you say :

except its identical to the live install (Xfce ?) but will save things to the hard disk.
i would like to have all the features i did with the full install of 2.5.x

what features ? , these can all be added or changed once you have the basics installed ,
Linuxcnc has moved away from Ubuntu to Debian , so this may be why you feel it is different from what you had previously , and may be confusing at first

but let us know exactly the features you need , however most are available from the synaptic package manager installer . is probably the easier way for you at the moment

Dell Dimension 4700 (Pentium 4 3GHz, 512MB RAM) looks like a pretty old computer so I'd say Ubuntu 10.04 is your best bet. Just upgrade to 2.7.
