Updating to latest version of 2.8

I seem to be stuck at version 2.8.0-pre1 2765 of LinuxCNC.

When I try to update to the latest version, either with apt-get or Synaptic Package Manager, it doesn't find anything newer. When I checked my sources list, I found it was requesting the 2.7 branch, not the master branch.

I've searched the forum for the correct string to use, but nothing seems to work (master-rt, master-rtai, etc.)

Have to admit, I'm pretty rusty at Linux. Can anyone help me out?

Thanks,
Tom

Success!

I had looked at buildbot, but apparently not close enough.

Thanks,
Tom

IF You do not Need Gantryhoming or the New featurers
DO NOT UPdate go with 2.7.14

Personally, I think this is bad advice. Master branch is all I've ever run. There are many things you get with the master branch but learning to compile it from source is by far the best way to keep current. Hopefully it will replace V 2.7 as the release version in the near future.

is there a list where every change from 2.7 to 2.8 is listed?

You would have to look at the commits on github

github.com/LinuxCNC/linuxcnc/commits/master

Noe that 2.7 was first released in 2015 so version 2.8 has moved on significantly since then.

The main ones I know are the joints (motors) are now independent of axes which is much better for gantry machines, multi spindle support, and external offsets plus many many improvements and bug fixes to the trajectory planner and other core components.

I have to say it is all so much easier today. I had to get to the PREEMPT_RT OS for my Mesa 7i76e and after I finally got it onto my PC, the latency was so bad it was unusable on my old PC. So then I bought a new USFF PC and was convinced to go with Linux Mint and the guys on the forum patiently stepped me through the process for compiling the PREEMPT_RT kernel. That was a journey! I knew I needed to run master branch to get the joint axis for my gantry and by the time I got that far, compiling Linuxcnc from source was a walk in the park!.

So about 2 weeks after that, somebody wrote a how to here on the forum to follow in my footsteps based in part on my journey. That became the goto path for preempt_rt until the stretch ISO was released.

I've found I have really enjoyed the ability to compile from source by typing just 3 lines on the console and more often than not, I've been running an experimental branch rather than the master branch. Swapping to and fro has always been very easy with 3-4 commands.. Today, I'm running a private build of Linuxcnc by forum member PhillC who has this amazing config for plasma machines if you compile from source! Updates are flying thick and fast and often an upgrade takes no more than 60 seconds!

I installed per these instructions...

...but i wasn't sure what to do with the "Key fingerprint". So it never got entered. What am I missing? :(
