Hi, why there are no more RTAI iso images available? One of the many linuxcnc advantages is the posibility to use older computers but they kind of "suck" at least in my experience.
Any links to a contemporary RTAI iso?

Thanks,

For the official ISO it is simple to switch to RTAI:

Hi, why there are no more RTAI iso images available?

It is very easy to change over.
It is rarely used.
Old computers are obsolete, so is parallel port.
Everything is moving towards ethernet and ethercat.

There are still a few Linuxcnc guys pushing RTAI and there is an image for Bullseye

Personally, I think its obsolete becasue PREEMPT_RT has attracted the corporate money, developers and attention whereas you can probably count the RTAI developers on one hand.

PREEMPT_RT is a series of patches to the mainline kernel. Slowly those patches are being pushed to mainline so the number of patches are reducing. The ultimate goal is to eliminate all the patches and that day is getting closer.... Then the mainline kernel will be real time.

Hi, why there are no more RTAI iso images available?

One  reason is that RTAI is now 64-bit only, so doesn't necessarily support the PCs you are talking about.

However the main reason is that in testing RTAI 5.2 proved to be unstable when LinuxCNC unloaded, causing kernel lock-ups.

We didn't want to distribute an ISO with that problem, but instead preferred to make it easy to switch to RTAI whilst making it clear in the description of the method that the kernel is known to be unstable.

Thank you!
The PC in question is 64-bit and I use it with linuxcnc for 5 or more years. The preempt-rt was giving me about three times worse latency then the RTAI version. Unfortunatelly I had a crash and need to reinstall it. This is why I'm looking for the last stable RTAI iso.

I understnd that the bright future is pointing towards using  mesa cards. Unfortunatelly they are almost not available and the shipping cost to my location is prohibitive.

I did that twice before posting here. For some strange reason, when I start Latency test or CNC itself, mouse and keyboard are freezing and I have no acces or controll anymore. I tried both regular mouse/keyboard  and usb ones with no effect.
This is why I started looking for a ready installation iso. Of coarse the problem could be something else.

OK, thank you all for your help. Problem found. PC is faulty.
I installed it for 3-th time - it was doing the same - freezing after starting Latency test. Then I moved the hard drive to an other PC and here everything was fine. How stupid I didn't do that first time  .
