Recommendations for a dual NIC SBC or mini-pc

Initially I was considering using a RPi5, but my intention is for LCNC to be networked and not host the UI, instead I would use the second nic to recieve individual commands or whole files if/when needed.

There are hats, but it seems it is likely easier to get a PC, there have been some topics but it has been some time since then, does anyone have recommendations for the smallest formfactor solution with dual NIC? Ideally we would be priced similar to RPi, but I would be happy <€300.

(I know it was a few years ago but in the Marco reps video it seemed that he had a ncie solution, but I couldn't find details on his).

Do you have an old PC at home?

You can always buy an extra PCIe NIC.

I've been using the H3 Plus for a few years and had no issues with it. The only thing you need to do is use the non-kernel realtek drivers for the nic. I'm pretty sure Rod from the forum also uses one.

I'm currently running a mill with the C box but you're situation would be better suited to the A box.
I like the fact the case and connectors are well integrated, full size HDMI ports, all but the power switch, Serial console connector, and the connector to power it from a non-usb supply (meanwell would be a good choice) are on one side.
The only caveat is that the NIC is a realtek based one, but as long as the cnc stuff goes thru the RPi interface everything should be ok.

Langdons would please provide an answer relevant to the question, the user was looking for a small form factor PC, almost a similar size as a RPi5.

I ordered a Radxa CubieA5E with a similar idea in mind; having an Ethercat motion controller accepting G-code over network. But it is too soon to say if it will work; I had a hard time having a working real-time kernel on the Radxa Zero3E, so this may take some time.

Anyway, you have one more option!

In the meantime I have a pi coming, thinking I can use usb-ethernet for non-realtime comms, though I prefer less components.

I'm using an RPi5 and a PCIe HAT with another NIC and some extra USB ports. Seems to work fine. It's the waveshare 27541. The setup needs the 5V 5A power supply to avoid voltage drops and hard resets. The 5V 3A power supply was not sufficient. I am using the official power supply in the control box as I had issues with other solutions. I'd also suggest a cooler for the cpu if you go this route.

Perhaps using a USB ethernet adaptor will increase the latency of the whole system.

Funny how things are, I've always run my RPi5 from the 15wat PSU, using the waveshare Nvme board and the RPi cooler. I have a keyboard with an internal USB hub and a wireless mouse connected via the hub in the keyboard, never had an issue with resets or the like. I have turned all the power saving stuff for the wireless interface off.
Maybe I've just been lucky with this one, and the other one I have will be different.

I have been testing LCNC on the pi with the nvme hat and PoE, until I realised that the integral RJ45 will be for the ethercat network and wont have PoE!! A bit of a misstep there. In a raspi environment the waveshare addon does complain about limited current availability and the shutdown of peripherals.

Less keen on the Rpi5 now because I realised it has integral wifi, my intention is for a product and adding wifi means I have to satify requirements of RED, so I even more so am interested in alternatives. The Odroid is looking more promising!

there are a few Intel N100 PC's put there with multi Intel NIC included. Some also have rs485 with terminal input. I would go with that in preference to the Odroid to get away from the realtek card.
