As little as possible. I added a grub screw in my z axis to take up as much pre-travel as I could.
It does not really matter but if you have a lot of travel, you waste a lot of time.

Okay, thank you.
Not knowing what I don't know I wasn't sure if longer (more gradual) might have any benefit in regard to repeatability for a cheap mechanical limit switch.
