I suppose it's about time for a full system upgrade. I'm on Mint 18.3.

I don't know enough about Mint/Ubuntu to help with upgrading the Qt version...

It was easiest just to upgrade to Mint 19.3 and re-install everything from scratch. It is all well now.
Side note: I did try Tommy's instructions for Mint 20.1 but could not get a RiP installation going. Figured it wasn't worth going against what is already tried and true.

Keep away from 20.1 if you need anything regarding development for now, it is a terrible mess! 
19.3 works perfectly, hell i even turned this PC ( my newest one dubbed "The wet mini beast" ) back to 19.3. Wet because it is water cooled...
